Abstract

Learning independence is an important aspect of elementary education, as it relates to students ability to manage their own learning, take responsibility for the learning process, and participate actively in classroom activities. However, fostering learning independence remains a challenge when instruction is predominantly teacher-centered and provides limited opportunities for students to take initiative. This study aims to examine the implementation of the Self-Directed Learning (SDL) model in fostering learning independence among elementary school students. It employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method by searching for scholarly articles on Google Scholar published between 2020 and 2026. Based on the selection process reported in the study, five relevant articles were analyzed descriptively, focusing on the implementation of SDL and its contributions to students’ learning processes and outcomes. The findings indicate that SDL is associated with the development of students’ initiative, responsibility, motivation, discipline, and active engagement in learning. The reviewed studies also report improvements in learning independence, critical thinking skills, and learning outcomes across several elementary school learning contexts. Nevertheless, implementing SDL involves more than simply giving students greater freedom; it requires appropriate teacher guidance, relevant learning resources, and learning activities tailored to students’ developmental stages. This review highlights SDL as a potential instructional approach for fostering learning independence among elementary school students when implemented in a structured and sustained manner.
