Abstract

The strengthening of religious moderation is a strategic program of the Indonesian government aimed at fostering a harmonious, tolerant, and cohesive national and civic life in accordance with the values of Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution. Formal educational institutions play an important role in promoting religious moderation through various school components, including the curriculum, educators, school activities, learning processes, and school culture. School activity culture based on Balinese local genius at SMP Negeri 1 Bangli is considered to have significant potential for strengthening religious moderation, supported by locally rooted school activities, teachers participating in the Religious Moderation Strengthening Program (PMB), and the religious diversity of students. This study examines: (1) the potential of school activity culture based on Balinese local genius to strengthen religious moderation; (2) Hindu Religious Education and Character Education teachers’ perceptions of this school activity culture; and (3) the challenges of utilizing it to strengthen religious moderation at SMP Negeri 1 Bangli. This study employs a rationalistic approach with a qualitative case study design. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and document analysis. The findings indicate that: (1) school activity culture based on Balinese local genius has strategic potential as a medium for strengthening religious moderation through SENSASI, RASI, KOBER, Wraspati Bulan Bali, Saniscara Meprani, Koin Berbagi, and Esaba Berbagi, which promote tolerance, social care, honesty, and respect for diversity; (2) Hindu Religious Education and Character Education teachers have positive perceptions of the school activity culture, considering it a medium for contextual learning; and (3) the challenges include uneven understanding among school community members, the need to enhance program organizers’ creativity, and limited facilities and infrastructure.
