A JOYFUL WORK IN HINDU PHILOSOPHY: R̥TA, KARMA YOGA, AND THE SPIRITUAL MEANING OF LABOR
Abstract
This article argues that joyful work, as understood in Hindu philosophy, is achieved by aligning human action with R̥ta, the cosmic principle of truth and order. Using a qualitative hermeneutic textual approach supported by interpretive reflections on Hindu cultural practices, the article redefines work not merely as economic activity but as sacred participation in cosmic harmony. Analysing metaphysical frameworks such as Trikona (creation, maintenance, dissolution) and Hindu ethical teachings on karma, particularly Karma Yoga and Niṣkāma Karma, the article demonstrates how these principles underpin a holistic view of work. Case studies from Hindu communities in Bali, Java, Lombok, and Lampung show these teachings in practice, supporting the central argument that Hindu thought reframes work as self-purification, social harmony, and spiritual liberation. In doing so, the article offers an alternative ethical perspective for addressing contemporary experiences of burnout, alienation, and loss of meaning in modern work culture.
