Abstract

This article examines the transformation of religious interpretation and authority in the age of social media algorithms. Traditionally, religious authority was legitimized through institutions, scholarly traditions, and hierarchical systems of knowledge transmission. The emergence of digital platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram has disrupted this pattern by enabling individuals to produce and circulate religious interpretations driven by visibility, virality, and audience engagement rather than institutional credentials. Using a qualitative-descriptive method based on library research, the study integrates theories of authority, media logic, and network society to analyze these shifts. The findings show that algorithms now function as powerful gatekeepers, contributing to the fragmentation of interpretation, the commodification of spirituality, and a growing crisis of religious authority. However, the algorithmic environment also opens new possibilities for collective, dialogical, and interfaith forms of interpretation within digital spaces. The article argues that strengthening digital religious literacy is crucial for critically evaluating online religious content and for sustaining reflective, ethical, and responsible forms of religious authority in contemporary digital society.
