FAMILY COMMUNICATION FROM A BALINESE HINDU PERSPECTIVE: BUILDING A HOME AS A SPACE OF HARMONY
Keywords:
Family Communication, Balinese Hinduism, Home (Gṛha), Tri Hita Karana, Spiritual HarmonyAbstract
Family communication within the Balinese Hindu tradition possesses a profound uniqueness that positions the home or gṛha not merely as a physical residential structure but as a spiritual and social space of harmony. This study aims to explore and analyze the ethical symbolic and spiritual dimensions of interactions among family members based on Balinese Hindu theological teachings. The research method applied is a qualitative approach utilizing cultural discourse analysis and theological literature studies. Findings indicate that family communication in Balinese society is not simply an interpersonal exchange of verbal messages but a daily ritual that maintains the balance of Tri Hita Karana which encompasses human relationships with the Divine (parahyangan) fellow humans (pawongan) and the natural environment (palemahan). The home is experienced as a microcosm wherein the values of dharma or righteousness karma or action and bhakti or devotion are actualized through interaction patterns grounded in affection respect and moral equality. This study concludes that reinforcing communication centered around the sacred household serves as a vital foundation for preserving moral integrity and domestic peace amid the rapid dynamics of global modernization.
