Abstract

This study examines the perspectives of residents towards the Leang-Leong tradition in Arjowilangun Village, Kalipare District, Malang Regency. This tradition is part of the village cleansing ritual which is carried out every year and is believed to be a form of respect for ancestors as well as a way to ward off disaster. Using descriptive qualitative methods and ethnographic approaches, researchers explore the meaning and views of society through interviews with religious leaders, older and younger generations. The research results show that people have diverse views. Religious figures emphasize the importance of adapting traditions to Islamic values, while the general public and the younger generation see these traditions as a cultural heritage that strengthens village identity. Even though there are differences in meaning, all sources agree that the Leang-Leong tradition needs to be preserved. This tradition not only functions as a spiritual and cultural medium, but also as a medium to strengthen social relations. This research contributes to the understanding of the meaning of local traditions and serves as a reference for preserving culture in a society that continues to develop.
