Abstract

The social media platform X provides users with a space to express themselves through written posts, quotes, and data without the necessity of revealing their true identity. This phenomenon allows for the creation of virtual identities that do not always conform to the social norms present in the real world. This study aims to analyse identity construction on X through the lens of cyberspace. A qualitative research method with a digital discourse analysis approach is employed to understand how identities are constructed and negotiated within the platform. The findings show that X provides a complex and flexible space for identity. It is complex because users can have multiple accounts with different identities, and flexible because they can choose to reveal their authentic identity or conceal it behind anonymity. Identities on X are shaped through various performative elements, such as username selection, avatars, and communication style, enabling users to construct alternative personas according to their needs and audience. This study also finds that the concept of cybertopia in the digital realm offers individuals the opportunity to create an ideal identity that may be difficult to achieve in the real world. Thus, X represents a platform that embodies the dynamics of digital identity formation within cyberspace's increasingly fluid and flexible space.
