Abstract

Traditional beverages play a vital role in various rituals and sacred ceremonies across cultures worldwide. The background to this research focuses on understanding how traditional beverages are used in the context of religion, purification, and the celebration of the human life cycle. The challenge faced is the limited number of studies linking the function of traditional beverages to ritual and sacred meanings within society, as well as how these practices are maintained amidst modernisation. This study employs a narrative literature review method to analyse various ethnographic and anthropological studies concerning the ritual functions of traditional beverages. The aim of this research is to explore the role of traditional beverages in offering ceremonies, purification, and spiritual healing. The results indicate that traditional beverages serve not merely as ordinary consumables, but also possess profound spiritual significance within rituals, strengthening human connections with the spiritual realm and ancestors, and marking transitions in social life.
