Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that is a major health problem globally and in Indonesia because it can lead to complications such as stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. Adult and elderly women are at higher risk of developing hypertension due to physiological changes, stress, and unhealthy lifestyles. Hypertension management is not limited to pharmacological methods but can also be achieved through non-pharmacological therapies such as yoga. One yoga therapy developing in Bali is pavanamuktatawa asana, a combination of yoga movements, breathing exercises, relaxation, and laughter therapy aimed at creating a sense of calm and happiness and improving blood circulation. This study aimed to determine the effect of pavanamuktatawa asana therapy on blood pressure in women with hypertension at Narayiana Ashram and to determine the differences in the effects between the control and treatment groups.
This study used a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The study sample consisted of women with hypertension divided into a treatment group and a control group. The treatment group received pavanamuktatawa asana therapy for 16 sessions, while the control group received standard treatment. Blood pressure measurements were taken before and after the intervention using a sphygmomanometer. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test to determine the difference before and after treatment and the Mann-Whitney test to determine the difference between the treatment and control groups.
The results showed that pavanamuktatawa asana therapy was effective in reducing blood pressure in women with hypertension. There was a decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the treatment group after the intervention compared to the control group. The statistical test results showed a significance value of p < 0.05, so H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. This indicates that pavanamuktatawa asana therapy is effective as a non-pharmacological therapy in helping to lower blood pressure in women with hypertension.
