Abstract

The declining interest of young people in learning Balinese has become an important issue in efforts to preserve Balinese language and culture. Globalization, technological development, and changes in modern lifestyles have reduced the use of Balinese in daily life, especially among young generations. This study aims to describe young people’s perceptions of Dharmagita in Balinese language learning, identify the obstacles faced in learning Dharmagita, and analyze the use of Dharmagita in increasing interest in learning Balinese among youth in Desa Adat Sading, Mengwi District, Badung Regency. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, literature study, and documentation involving traditional village officials, Dharmagita instructors, and youth as informants. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that Dharmagita can serve as an effective medium for Balinese language learning because it combines vocal art, religious values, literature, vocabulary, and direct cultural experience. Dharmagita can increase young people’s interest in learning Balinese, foster pride in local culture, and strengthen emotional attachment to the Balinese language. However, its implementation still faces several obstacles, including limited time, lack of understanding of Kawi language and classical Balinese vocabulary, the influence of popular culture and technology, limited facilities, and inconsistent guidance from family, school, and community environments. Therefore, Dharmagita needs to be developed as a contextual, creative, and culture-based strategy for Balinese language learning.
