Abstract

The religious life of the Hindu community in Bali cannot be separated from the existence of wariga knowledge, which has been passed down from generation to generation as a guideline for determining the appropriate time to carry out various activities, particularly religious ceremonies and other social activities. In Selulung Traditional Village, the process of determining dewasa ayu is not only carried out through wariga calculations but also through the practice of nunas dewasa ayu from a paniwak dewasa, namely a person who possesses knowledge and experience in the field of wariga. This practice demonstrates the interrelationship between traditional knowledge, belief systems, and the religious practices of the community. In the process of nunas dewasa ayu, the use of upakāra holds an important position as a ritual means of expressing devotion, supplication, respect, and sincerity to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa and His manifestations. Based on this phenomenon, this study aims to examine the magical aspects of determining dewasa ayu, the role of the paniwak dewasa, and the meaning of using upakāra in providing options for selecting auspicious days in Selulung Traditional Village. This study employs a qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the determination of dewasa ayu is a practice that combines wariga calculations, the experience of the paniwak dewasa, belief in niskāla forces, and the use of upakāra as a medium for requesting guidance in selecting an appropriate day. The magical aspect of this practice is understood within the framework of the community's belief in the order of time, the harmonious relationship between humans and nature, and the balance between sekāla and niskāla life. Thus, the determination of dewasa ayu functions not merely as a system for selecting an appropriate time but also as part of the local knowledge heritage and religious practices that embody religious, social, cultural, and symbolic values in the life of the Hindu community in Selulung Traditional Village.
