Abstract

This study is motivated by the dynamics of the lives of non-Buddhist students living in a dormitory environment with a Buddhist majority, particularly at the STIAB Smaratungga Women’s Dormitory, which potentially presents experiences of tolerance as well as psychosocial challenges. The purpose of this study is to understand the daily lived experiences, challenges related to religious differences, and personal adaptation and coping strategies of non-Buddhist students within a majority–minority religious context. This study employs a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews, analyzed through narrative analysis and network analysis with the assistance of ATLAS.ti software. The findings indicate that daily routines and the Buddhist atmosphere of dormitory life shape the emotional experiences of non-Buddhist students in dual ways, both positive and challenging. Personal religious values serve as a primary foundation for building social support and social adaptation, which in turn strengthen personal coping strategies. In addition, guidance from teachers and dormitory counselors plays an important role in managing negative experiences and maintaining harmonious communal life. The conclusions of this study emphasize that tolerance in the dormitory environment is not static but rather the result of dynamic social and emotional processes. The implications of this study highlight the importance of guidance that is sensitive to religious diversity in creating an inclusive and harmonious dormitory environment.
